Moriké Keita aka Mo DJ
Off the beaten tracks Mo Dj comes from nowhere in his own universe, he is from Bamako, the capital city of Mali, but he has created his own world into the mix. His mother, from a traditional and poor family gave him once a double tape recorder, and it’s how everything has began.
Mo Dj, Which real name is MORIKE KEITA is rarely named Morike. Morike is a name usually deserved to the marabou Cassette vendor along the station road in Bamako by day and dj in the Malian capital by night. He is one of the first to remix Malian music or African music in general, with the available means and thanks to a small rhythm box, which has lent its name to his genre of music, and which is set to revolutionise Westen dance floors : ‘Djembeni’ (litteraly: small djembe) His selection is pure 100% african music, from Soweto to Kenya, or from Abidjan and also Legos to Bamako or Kinshasa . His selection is made on the urban sidewalk of the new generation of african music . The way he loops in his mix add to the way he plays with his beatbox on top of the rest, give a very unusual and original flavour to his set. He’s now paris based . He’s finished an album featuring remixes of artists like Amadou & Mariam, K’naan, Neneh Cherry or Franz Ferdinand . He was also part of the last African Express show lead by Damon Albarn in Liverpool last march . Mo Dj is on the way to break through.
