AFRICA FROM PAST TO FUTURE

By Music Artistic Director Alain Weber

If you take a look at the recent history of our music, you cannot help but notice the fundamental influence that Africa has had and still has on this, whether in Europe, America, the Caribbean or in the Indian Ocean.

As if to exorcise the tragic period of slavery, Africa has literally transcended, both modally and rhythmically, most of today’s popular music, from gospel to jazz, from blues to rock, from soul to rap, or from funk to hip-hop.

African music, through the virtual motorways of the Internet, has thus established itself as the pulsating touchstone of global streaming.

In the beginning, there is the founding, ritual art, when the body, in its animal extravagance, within a codified nature, carrier of the supernatural world, becomes spirit and word, incarnating epics, genealogy and mythology of a people and its ancestors.

Contemporary African art, surrounded by a multitude of new signals, in its curious and prolific approach, reinvents certain codes of this original rituality.

This project thus aims to make the connection between this intangible musical heritage and the new urban expressions of an Africa, which, as the elders say, is aware of the fact that we cannot plan the future without knowledge of the past.
